The Post Office was opened in 1929 and served over 40 years as Akron's main post office. Although the site was purchased in 1913 when federal funds were originally appropriated, construction was delayed by World War I until 1927. Used by the Postal Service until erection of a larger and more efficient building on Wolf Ledges in 1975. The building was listed on the National Register in 1983.

Granite terrace approaches central block which features glazed arcade of paired Tuscan columns on pedestals, corresponding pilasters, and medallion keystones. Projecting corner pavilions include a window with triangular pediment enclosed within a round arch, a string course, and rusticated corners. Blind and piered parapet and central balustrade conclude architectural details.
